Recently: Borderlands $4.99, Preorder Borderlands 2

Recently: Borderlands $4.99, Preorder 2

Borderlands 2 is $4.99 on Steam right now until July 30th. You can play the original for FREE on Steam until Sunday 1PM PST. You can also preorder Borderlands 2 now for $59.99.

As of right now the phenominally successful Arma 2 DayZ mod lists 882,168 unique players. The mod is still in its alpha stage and suffers quite a large number of issues such as griefers ALT-F4ing out of combat, “ghosting” (momentarily changing servers to flank players) and connection issues. Along with bugs in general. Regardless of these issues the mod is still going strong. I think players generally feel that the right issues aren’t being fixed at the right time but fixes are coming in on a semi-regular basis.

The Just Cause 2 multiplayer mod is in development again. Retail (legit) copies will be required according to the developers.

Mod Spotlight: ARMA 2 DayZ

Mod Spotlight: Arma 2 DayZ

Unfortunately I’ve been on a bit of a hiatus lately dealing with some health issues. Not a lot was happening in the PC gaming sphere worth talking about so I took my time.

Something quite interesting was brought to my attention by Megamansx recently though. DayZ is a persistent-world zombie and the elements survival mod for Arma II. It’s probably not what you’re imagining. It’s better. Think Left 4 Dead in a persistent world with a massive landscape. You’re plopped down onto the map and left to your own devices. You must survive by finding food, ammo and avoiding zombies, other players and your inevitable perma-death. You will die. It’s just a matter of when.

Apparently you can repair vehicles and drive them (like a bus, tractor or even a helicopter) but the parts are difficult to find. Check it out. Better yet, this video explains DayZ quite well.

If you own Arma 2 then I’d suggest giving DayZ a look. ARMA II: Operation Arrowhead is required to play DayZ.

Another great mod is on the horizon. The Just Cause 2 multiplayer mod has been ‘resurrected’ and is back in business. I can’t believe that JC2 (a really fun sandbox) was not designed with MP in the first place. JC2 could have been an amazing success had MP been included.

Check it: Flight Simulator X FsPassengers

Check it: Flight Sim X FsPassengers

I am definitely late in getting into using FsPassengers for Flight Simulator X but late is better than never. This add-on is amazing and if you play FSX then you’ve got to check it out.

With the recent release of the free-to-play Microsoft Flight you’re probably (like many of us) thinking that Microsoft has given up on making good flight simulators. Well until they pull their heads out of their asses FSX is still valid.

A drawback of Free Flight is it just doesn’t push you to follow the rules. FsPassengers changes this by giving you virtual passengers on your flights and an airline company to manage. My companies name is EliteTransX. I’m terrible at naming anything.

Your passengers react to everything; ticket prices, food and beverage prices and the way you fly. If you have a hard landing they respond accordingly. Kill your passengers in a crash and obviously your rating will suffer. On a recent flight my passengers were afraid of the turbulence and my rating dropped significantly but eventually rose to 98% once the adrenaline settled.

Your flights are graded on how your passengers feel and your performance as a pilot. Forget to set flaps on take-off or landing and that will deduct points from your Flight Report.

Another great thing about FsP is the random failures. You can set this for a percentage. I have it set at 5%. FSX only allows you do setup specific failures at a specific time and that just isn’t realistic, fun or educational. Plus if you know what is going to fail then it’s not a test of your ability to cope and fix the problem.

At the end of each flight you get a Flight Report grading your performance and how passengers feel about the flight. You can recall these reports at any time. Also you can bring up a Flights Map which shows past flights. There are dozens of options, settings and records to look at.

FSX FsPassengers Flight Report

If you enjoy FSX or just haven’t played in a while, pick up FsP and give it another shot. It changes the game for the better.

Minecraft 1.1 Mod Spotlight: Mocreatures, etc.

Minecraft 1.1 Mod Spotlight: Mocreatures, Treecapitator

A combination of mods in 1.1 that I particularly like is MoCreatures with Treecapitator and Convenient Inventory. Of course you will also need Modloader, AudioMod, GUI Api and CustomMobSpawner to make these work. The Minecraft Forum threads will also lead you to these mods.

Mocreatures adds many new neutral and aggressive mobs. You can also tame and breed many of them. Werewolves prowl the night and upon daylight return to their human form. The most dangerous mob is the Ogre which will destroy blocks with its powerful fists to get to you.

Treecapitator allows you to (while using an axe) break the base block of a tree causing the upper blocks to fall similar to Terraria. When a tool breaks CI automatically places an extra in your hand from your inventory if it’s available; along with allowing you to sort your inventory in different ways.

Installing all of these mods can go wrong quite easily if done in the wrong order or incorrectly. The first time I did everything correctly and the second I managed to screw it up. In other words make sure you read the instructions; unlike me on the second install.

As always REIMinimap is an excellent mod. I love the fact that you can place waypoints to mark points of interest on your map such as your current home. That is extremely helpful in hardcore mode when you simply can’t risk getting lost or losing resources you left in a chest somewhere.
