As of right now the phenominally successful Arma 2 DayZ mod lists 882,168 unique players. The mod is still in its alpha stage and suffers quite a large number of issues such as griefers ALT-F4ing out of combat, “ghosting” (momentarily changing servers to flank players) and connection issues. Along with bugs in general. Regardless of these issues the mod is still going strong. I think players generally feel that the right issues aren’t being fixed at the right time but fixes are coming in on a semi-regular basis.
The Just Cause 2 multiplayer mod is in development again. Retail (legit) copies will be required according to the developers.

Unfortunately I’ve been on a bit of a hiatus lately dealing with some health issues. Not a lot was happening in the PC gaming sphere worth talking about so I took my time.
Something quite interesting was brought to my attention by Megamansx recently though. DayZ is a persistent-world zombie and the elements survival mod for Arma II. It’s probably not what you’re imagining. It’s better. Think Left 4 Dead in a persistent world with a massive landscape. You’re plopped down onto the map and left to your own devices. You must survive by finding food, ammo and avoiding zombies, other players and your inevitable perma-death. You will die. It’s just a matter of when.
Apparently you can repair vehicles and drive them (like a bus, tractor or even a helicopter) but the parts are difficult to find. Check it out. Better yet, this video explains DayZ quite well.
If you own Arma 2 then I’d suggest giving DayZ a look. ARMA II: Operation Arrowhead is required to play DayZ.
Another great mod is on the horizon. The Just Cause 2 multiplayer mod has been ‘resurrected’ and is back in business. I can’t believe that JC2 (a really fun sandbox) was not designed with MP in the first place. JC2 could have been an amazing success had MP been included.

A combination of mods in 1.1 that I particularly like is MoCreatures with Treecapitator and Convenient Inventory. Of course you will also need Modloader, AudioMod, GUI Api and CustomMobSpawner to make these work. The Minecraft Forum threads will also lead you to these mods.
Mocreatures adds many new neutral and aggressive mobs. You can also tame and breed many of them. Werewolves prowl the night and upon daylight return to their human form. The most dangerous mob is the Ogre which will destroy blocks with its powerful fists to get to you.
Treecapitator allows you to (while using an axe) break the base block of a tree causing the upper blocks to fall similar to Terraria. When a tool breaks CI automatically places an extra in your hand from your inventory if it’s available; along with allowing you to sort your inventory in different ways.
Installing all of these mods can go wrong quite easily if done in the wrong order or incorrectly. The first time I did everything correctly and the second I managed to screw it up. In other words make sure you read the instructions; unlike me on the second install.
As always REIMinimap is an excellent mod. I love the fact that you can place waypoints to mark points of interest on your map such as your current home. That is extremely helpful in hardcore mode when you simply can’t risk getting lost or losing resources you left in a chest somewhere.

More Creeps and Weirdos
Better Than Wolves
Better Than BuildCraft
We won’t be seeing any full mods for Skyrim just yet but there are a few goodies that you should take a look at. As always, the authority on Elder Scrolls mods is Nexus. Curse is trying it’s best to take the title, but Nexus has been well established for years.
One of the most useful apps for Skyrim that I’ve come across is the Skyrim Savegame Manager. There’s no easy way to manage multiple characters’ saved games in Skyrim. This mod will do it for you. Skyrim is an amazing game and no doubt you will be playing multiple characters at some point.

Vanilla-Minecraft is one of those games that just isn’t quite satisfying by itself. Lots of PC titles really shine with community mods and Minecraft is one.
There are some great single player mods, texture packs and skins. MoreCreeps and Weirdos is pretty wild. There is a plethora of server-side plugins that require no setup for connected users. Of course the admin must install and configure the addons. Users simply connect and enjoy them seamlessly.
With the right configuration you can turn Minecraft into the ultimate sandbox.
To really make your world shine you will need the right texture pack. It really depends on the environment you are designing. If you’re creating a desert biome with Egyptian architecture I recommend trying Doku. I’m using Doku in the screenshots below. You could also modify several texture packs, taking the textures that you like from each one.
The server-side plugins that I list all require Bukkit. Server-side plugins that are able to use money (Citizen and Resident for example) can take advantage of an economy plugin such as BOSEconomy. BOSEconomy seems to be the best available economy plugin right now.
For some great video tutorials on installing and configuring specific plugins subscribe to woopagaming and shawnvmartin.
For an extremely easy and powerful way to edit your worlds WorldEdit is available as a client-side and server-side mod. You can install it on your Bukkit server and setup permissions with the Permissions plugin. Then decide which WorldEdit (or other plugins’) commands each user or group has access to.
After you install WorldEdit take a look at the World Edit Client-side Interface. Without it you won’t be able to see the selections that you are making. It turns your selections into a cuboid wireframe.
This is likely the best graphical mod I’ve ever seen to date.
The video is a bit outdated as the mod has been updated to improve it. Yea, apparently there was room for improvement to this epic mod.
