Mojang's 0x10c, EA's Poo Award, Aion F2P

On April 11th Aion will be free-to-play and you can download the client now to get ready. We will be streaming Aion live at our Twitch.TV on the 11th. Vanguard will be going free-to-play this summer.

Those with an active subscription of Star Wars: The Old Republic are now able to invite 25 of their friends for a seven day trial. TOR offered up another free-to-play weekend for new players. That trial period ends at 5:00PM AEST April 9.

Mojang and Notch’s newly announced possibly-to-be online (with monthly charge) space travel game called 0x10c is slightly reminiscent of Eve Online. Their may be seamless space-to-planet transitions. Seamless transitions are relatively new to games but have been done before (Evochron Mercenary and Infinity Universe). That doesn’t mean they’re not awesome!

Check out Infinity Universe’s seamless transitions:

Minecraft 1.2.5 is officially released. Check here for the change log. Changes include: shift-click support for furnaces, fixes for chat crashes and changes to cat behavior.

Electronic Arts has received the 2012 Golden Poo award from Consumerist for being the Worst Company in America. Rightfully so! Well, I wouldn’t say the worst company ever but they have a bad reputation in gaming for valid reasons. Back in 2004 EA was sued by employees for unpaid overtime. Secret World is now accepting pre-orders.

Recently: The Old Republic 1.1 Update

Recently: The Old Republic 1.1 Update

Bioware released the 1.1 Rise of the Rakghouls update to The Old Republic this morning. The update fixed a great deal of bugs and added a new flashpoint. That’s awesome!

What’s not so awesome is Sith are still overpowered and no nerfs were handed out to them. Snipers still outrange every class in the game. Sith Inquisitor’s are still overpower Consulars. Imperial Agent operatives still 3-shot (which Scoundrels simply can’t do very often) and it’s nearly impossible to react 75% of the time. Sith are so overpowered that thousands of players are switching from Republic to Sith, making the 2:1 outnumbering even worse. The fact is, Bioware needs to react quickly in the coming weeks and correct many issues with PVP, balance and end-game.

The update put 50s in warzones by themselves. 50s can no longer farm low levels in warzones. You will find most Sith on Ilum where they outnumber Republic and can farm Republic and valor. Completing dailies as a Republic player is quite a task right now. Republic is outnumbered about 30:1 on Ilum since the update this morning. Watch the video below to see how extensive the issue is.

The game still has a few graphic glitches which occur at times. The 1.1 update caused an issue which shows the loading screen randomly. Another issue was present prior to 1.1 that caused walls and objects to flicker on and off. Here is an example.

Update: Bioware responded quickly to issues created by 1.1 and applied a hotfix.

The Old Republic: Release Notes

The Old Republic: Release Notes

I have barely given myself time to come up for air since the release of Star Wars: The Old Republic. Bioware did a great job and the release of TOR has been a huge success.

There aren’t a lot of MMOs in which I enjoy PVP. I love PVP in SWTOR. Huttball is frackin awesome. For a while almost everyone was able to enjoy PVP. I play on a lot of alts and I can tell you it’s no fun playing against level 50s in their welfare epics on a lower level.

Bolster works really well for players <50 when there are no 50s in the warzone. The good news is that Bioware will be giving 50s their own warzones. A good thing because players with massive egos and welfare epics are already flaunting their egos because they can actually survive being attacked by a noob now.

Kids have already started complaining about no win buttons in TOR. One flashpoint boss has already been nerfed, because bad players couldn't take an extremely easy boss down within 3 minutes before it enraged. I don't expect Bioware to fully give in to these babies, but it's inevitable for their to be nerf upon nerf in an MMO. It's unfortunate so many unintelligent care bears can't handle using one brain cell in a video game.

As I have been saying for months, the player base in TOR will be less mature than in World of Warcraft and that is exactly what we’re seeing. Higher and higher level areas are being flooded with trolls and Republic/Imperial Fleet is the troll hub. If you thought Barrens or Trade Chat was bad then you will remember those days proudly once you experience the trolls in TOR.

A few patches have been released since Early Access. The issues that were fixed by these patches didn’t all appear to be high priority to a lot of players. Regardless of what we feel the priorities are, bugs are getting fixed on a regular basis and that’s awesome. We can’t complain. So settle down and stop crying about maintenance.

I’m really enjoying crafting. In the first few days I noticed that bio (for implants) and cybertech (for earpieces) were two of the better crew skills just because you don’t get upgrades to those as often. Crafted armor and weapons aren’t as good as they could be, but with a crit (augment slot) on a good recipe you potentially have an excellent upgrade. Now that slicing has been nerfed, I no longer have my bankroll and crafting can get expensive.

Minus the whiners, trolls and ego-maniac panda converts it’s everything I hoped for.

Beta Review: Star Wars The Old Republic

Beta Review: The Old Republic

I have been waiting for this game since before the forums opened up on Oct 21 2008. I’ve been waiting for a new Star Wars MMO since Star Wars: Galaxies’ combat upgrade around 2004. This weekend was the massive stress test. Just about everyone who signed up for beta access on the official site (ever) got invited. As soon as the beta started this weekend; I was online within a minute.

Having played a Bounty Hunter prior to this weekend, I decided to give Jedi Knight a try. Later on I played with the Trooper, Smuggler, Imperial Agent and Inquisitor.

You probably have or had a specific class in mind. As did I. Originally I planned to play the smuggler. The least likely class I thought I would play: trooper. By the end of the beta my mind was changed. Trooper Commando (heal spec) is now high up on the list. As is Jedi Knight and Imperial Agent.

My experience with the Bounty Hunter was good, but not what I imagined. At least in the first 18 levels. The story just didn’t grab me. Bear in mind though: Bounty Hunter is still kind of a bad ass.

Each day (Friday-Sunday) saw a new wave of beta testers unleashed on the servers. At no point did I ever see a latency higher than 30-50ms. As soon as players were able to hit the play button on Friday their were around 150 players on Tython. Sunday I saw over 300 in some areas. If I counted correctly (give or take one) there were 52 servers on Sunday packed to the brim. Not counting EU servers.

Stress Test Servers

Will dealing with a packed server be a problem? From this experience I don’t think so. The servers handle players extremely well. Areas are large enough. Phasing is done in the right places (and I wouldn’t mind if it was done more often). At one point there were around 50 players in a semi-small area (when the beta first started). I didn’t have any real issues doing my quests at that point and no lag at all (perfect 40ms latency).

Throw away your perceptions of what it’s like to play a healer. In World of Warcraft it seems like you’re constantly on the edge. One mistake or moment of lag and your party can easily wipe. Your peripheral vision is none existent. You’re either staring at the party bar or Heal Bot and just can’t immerse yourself in the game you are playing. In The Old Republic the opposite is true. You’re able to be immersed in the fight and the flashpoint (instance). There are also attacks that you can use to do damage without wasting ammo (or whatever your character uses to power heals and attacks). In other words: you can actually enjoy the flashpoint rather than going cross-eyed as you stare at health bars.

As far as bugs: not many. Small things like momentary issues with the map. Nothing inhibited gameplay other than a few crashes over the entire weekend.

Players were responding very well in-game. The same goes for Twitter. I would estimate that less than 1 in every 20 players weren’t entirely happy. The rest seemed extremely happy. I can’t recall any players that just outright hated the game. Unfortunately you can expect drama and immaturity. No differently than in World of Warcraft. The only difference being many SWTOR players won’t put up with it and are more likely to use the ignore feature.

Odds are if you are thinking about buying this game then you should buy it because you will love it. Get it and be ready for December 20th. It’s going to be the biggest (and likely smoothest) MMO launch in history.

Check out The Avengers trailer. I’m not necessarily a fan of these movies, but Iron Man was pretty good and Thor actually wasn’t all that bad. Scarlett Johansson is in it. Good enough for me. Oh yea AND there is a new American Pie movie with the original cast. Here is the trailer.

It amazes me how much people get out of Minecraft. At times it’s like watching a child as he plays alone in his room creating vast worlds in his mind using only the toys at his disposal. There are limits to what you can do in a video game. Even Minecraft. Yet people entertain themselves endlessly. This guy decided to create a video series of a his travels in Minecraft with only one life to live.

Check out Revision3 for shows like The Totally Rad Show, Film Riot and Destructoid.

The Star Wars: The Old Republic release date is now Dec 20th in both the US and EU. The EU date was originally the 22nd. Check out the new Signs of War trailer.

Here’s some sweet info on Skyrim werewolves. Apparently certain races have a resistance to the lycan syndrome-disease-condition-thing. Let’s just call it lycanherpes. Works for me. According to the blog there is no cure for lycanthropy but the condition does have methods of which to be held back.

The Battlefield 3 open beta brought in 8 million players. There is also a BF3 reality show called Operation Gridiron. Here is Episode 1 and Episode 2. At least it’s not a Call of Duty reality show. I don’t think I need to tell you how pathetic that would be.

Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple Inc. passed away on October 5th. He was born on February 24 1955. The Apple website displayed this image.

When Netflix announced it’s Qwikster DVD service (splitting DVD services off from Netflix) I said this would be an extremely bad move. Apparently so many people agreed that Netflix changed it’s mind.

If you’re playing RAGE and noticing some weird graphical glitches then you will want to update the game and your video card drivers. RAGE shipped with some odd bugs. A recent patch also adds new graphics settings. Speaking of RAGE. It’s awesome. No really. I expect the wingstick to go down in gaming history.

I will give you at least one great reason to attend Blizzcon. Foo Fighters will be performing. But Blizzard says don’t expect a Titan discussion. It’s likely that we won’t be seeing Blizzard’s new MMO anytime soon.

EA held a 1.6 million dollar Battlefield 3 tournament and excluded PC gamers. Yes, they actually excluded the main and original fan base of the series. Have we come to expect more from EA? Not really.
